us appreciate it. greta continues with the news we'll see you back tomorrow night. thanks for being with us. >> greta: this is a fox news alert. the news out of haiti tonight is worse than we've feared, thousands dead, survivors, buried, the world is racing to help but the country is in chaos. time is our enemy. >> greta: jonathan live at the airport in port-au-prince. >> reporter: we arrived at this very busy airport many hours ago. we have watched through the day as the cargo planes from across the globe, including of course many u.s. airforce

c-17's have come and again today bringing in aid supplies and personnel. i can tell you greta, we also spent a great deal of time beyond the confines of this airport touring much of the city. when you go outside of this airport, greta, it is like going through the gates of hell. there are people outside clamoring to get in to find any way to get out of this country. they are almost fighting at the doors of this airport to get through. they are not being allowed to. out on the streets, a scene of desperation. there's a degree of calm to that desperation right now, i should add that is very important. we drove past a shopping mall which was once three or four stories. pancaked to less than one story. at 5 p.m., which is when the quake hit there would have been dozens, perhaps hundreds of people in that shopping mall. they are presumably all buried beneath the rubble. the same true of so many

builds we have seen today thousands upon thousands are dead. thousands upon thousands of bodies are rotting in the 90° temperatures that the haitians are suffering through now. the stench of death is omnipresent as you drive around this city. the president, president preval i spoke to here at the airport a few hours ago he said his country is broken his government is broken some of his own government ministers died, presidential palace destroyed he said openly, we cannot cope we need all the international help we can get. it is coming but it may not be quick enough. when i talk about the calm desperation you see on streets now that is important. but i have to caution that many haitians are saying us to tonight if they don't get the water they need, they don't get the food they need, they don't get the medical supplies, tents, shelter they need in the next 24 to 48 hours this situation could become much, much worse very quickly. we have seen what happens in

haiti when violence takes over. that is a distinct possibility if the international community does not get the food, water, medicines beyond the confines of this airport into the hands of the people who so desperately need it. >> greta: jonathan, one of the problems is getting that airport open. we circled for three hours today and couldn't get in planes stacked 11 high circling. thee(ú problem is cleaning up te tarmac. is that being done to get those planes out so other planes can land? >> reporter: yeah. the airport is very much open greta. you can see behind me some of the planes that backed up here. you can probably hear them coming in now. looks like possibly another c-17 coming in now. i think it is another u.s. airforce c-17 they are coming in every two minutes now. one of the reasons why some planes have had to circle bringing in perhaps the media, they are simply trying to get

in as many actual aid planes as they can right now. the marines, have taken over the running of this airport pretty much. they will be in 100% control of it by this time tomorrow that will help. it is already helping. it is a well run operation here the problem is not so much getting the aid here to the airport, it is getting it out to the streets. i spent many hours on the streets today. i did not see one single instance of any kind of aid, medical, food, water being handed out to the people. that is what they need. right now they have some water. they have some food. they have very little medicine throw. they will not have food and water much longer under their own volition. they need these supplies. they have to be taken out of this airport and on to the streets and into the hands of the people or we will all be faced with another tragedy on top of the awful tragedy that unfolded 48 hours ago. >> greta: one thing jonathan,

10:35 pm
ap reporting some of the sketchy details. as you just said it was all done behind closed doors. what it looks like from the initial reports, is that the unions got a very sweet deal here. what happened is that tax that is supposed to apply to the high cost what we call the cadillac health care plans, guess who got exempted from that tax? it appears that almost all of the unions will not pay that tax. any american who gets their health care through either a private insurance plan or through their employer not a union would be affected by the plan. that's patently unfair. why should unions get a deal that every other american doesn't? >> greta: the unions are supportive. democratic party. >> that might be the answer. >> greta: all right. two issues, one the content of the deal. you say it is sketchy, we don't know what it is. that's one issue. before we get to the issue, the fact that it is done behind closed doors that we

10:37 pm
those who have the most political clout, who gave the highest contribution get exempted from the bill. >> in other words if you work for a small business it doesn't have a union, generous health care program because you are not part of some union it is tough luck to you and it is an union membership which is what has you in or out on this deal? >> that appears to be the fact from what we are seeing reported tonight. we would know all the facts if the cameras and the microphones had been there and americans could see how the political process works. i'm sure the obama administration glad those cameras weren't there because this one smells really bad. >> greta: you don't like the fee on banks that has come out today? you don't like that one, do you? >> i don't. we have a credit crisis now. the president talks about this all the time. why aren't the banks lending more? i talk to small businessmen
10:38 pm
and women who say they can't get loans from banks. how are you going to unfreeze the credit gridlock putting more taxes and fees on the banks? that makes it harder to loan. >> these are directed at the banks that received money from the american people to remain solvent. i don't have a huge amount of sympathy, because they did use our money. when -- when we length them the money did they pay interest? have they already paid extra? did they pay interest at a competitive rate? what was their interest rate? >> good point, i'm glad you mentioned this. the vast majority of the banks that did get this tarp money, as you know i was not a big fan of the program. those banks all have not only paid back the money most have paid back the money with interest. >> greta: wait, a second, the ones who paid it back why
10:39 pm
haven't they paid the interest. if i borrow $100 from a bank i got to pay interest. was that interest rate -- we see credit card rays going up to 29.9%. how much interest rates did the banks pay on our money that we length them? >> you know, i don't know the answer. but i do know -- >> greta: can you find that out? >> i will. but they did not pay a 29% interest rate. my point is general motors and chrysler are the two institutions that borrowed most that have not paid back the money and this tax does not apply to them that's what i feel is unfair and unjust. >> greta: two wrongs don't make a right. if these banks got money from us and they paid a good solid competitive interest rate then i'm fine for not penalizing them. if they got a sweetheart deal, i don't care i'm with the president penal -- ize them.
